At what level of skating does my child have to be for hockey?

It's an exciting time getting your kids involved with hockey, especially for the first time.  Parents often wonder what are the age / skill level needed to play.

While the ability to skate strongly is not mandatory, most parents choose to put their kids in once they are already skating.  Again, this is not 100% required, we will teach your child to skate, if they're at the maturity level to get up on their own.

Generally, the age of 4 is when children are at the maturity and skill level to start.  With that said, there are exceptions, and have had many examples of children younger than that who successfully finish a very fun season.  Children should be able to get up unassisted.  While skate-assists (walkers) are used for some beginners - if a child is unable to move around on their own, parents/guardians (equipped with helmet) are asked to help their own child since coaches are managing practices.  It’s a great time to get involved with your kids!

Usually within a few weeks, coaches do not allow skate-assists on the ice, so your child will need to be at a level that they have full mobility.  We find that even for children with no previous skating experience, with regular practice, they gain the necessary balance after just a few weeks.

Keep in mind, that especially in younger groups, there may be a minimal volunteer staff working with groups of over 30-40 children.  We are always welcoming new volunteers to help, so if you'd like to assist, please feel free to!
